Required Documents for Entry

To Return to the United States

You must have one of the following to re-enter the US:

  • Valid US Passport — the most widely accepted document.
  • US Passport Card — accepted at land border crossings (not valid for air travel).
  • Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) — accepted from participating states (WA, MI, MN, NY, VT).
  • SENTRI Card — trusted traveler program card (expedited crossing).
  • Global Entry Card — also accepted at land borders.

Important: Your document must be valid and not expired. Expired documents will not be accepted.

For Children

  • Children under 16 traveling with parents can use a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
  • Children 16 and older need a passport or passport card.
  • If a child is traveling with only one parent, a notarized consent letter from the other parent is strongly recommended.

For Non-US Citizens

  • Permanent residents need a valid Green Card plus their passport.
  • Visa holders should verify their visa allows re-entry to the US after visiting Mexico.
  • Canadian citizens need a valid passport.

Documents for Dental Visits

  • Dental records or X-rays — bring copies of recent dental work, X-rays, or treatment plans from your US dentist.
  • Insurance information — if your dental insurance covers international treatment, bring your policy details.
  • List of allergies — especially to anesthetics, antibiotics, or latex.
  • Current medications list — share this with your dentist in Los Algodones.

Documents for Pharmacy Purchases

  • Valid prescription — for controlled medications, a US prescription is recommended.
  • Medications must be for personal use only (typically up to a 90-day supply).
  • Keep medications in their original containers when crossing back.
  • Some medications available OTC in Mexico may be controlled in the US — check before purchasing.

US Customs Declaration

  • You may bring back up to $800 USD in purchases duty-free.
  • Declare all purchases to customs officers when asked.
  • Keep all receipts organized and accessible.
  • Restricted items: certain foods (fresh fruits, meats), large quantities of alcohol (more than 1 liter), and Cuban cigars.
  • Prescription medications should have proper documentation.

  1. Copy of your passport (stored separately from the original).
  2. Travel insurance policy details.
  3. Emergency contact information.
  4. Hotel reservation confirmation (if staying overnight).
  5. Your dentist's appointment confirmation.
